Specifically involved in basic and applied research on viruses and virus diseases affecting Mediterranean crops
The Institute of Plant Virology (IVV) belongs to the National Research Council (CNR), a public research organization. The operative unit of Bari (IVV-BA) is specifically involved in basic and applied research on viruses and virus diseases affecting Mediterranean crops. Activities on PPV included eradication programs, development of diagnostic tools, strain characterization, establishement of guidelines and protocols for the production and propagation of certified plant materials. The IVV-BA has a long established cooperation with the Department of Plant Protection and Applied Microbiology (DPPMA) of the University of Bari and the Centro di Studio e Sperimentazione in Agricoltura “Basile Caramia” (CRSA), Locorotondo (Bari).

Material resourcesA screenhouse at DPPMA fully dedicated to PPV-infected Prunus spp. Two screenhouses at CRSA are devoted to testing and challenging for PPV resistance on cultivars and breeding lines. Electron microscope: a “Philips Morgagni” transmission electron microscope will be used for all the potential needs in the project (immunoelectro-microscopy; thin section analysis and cytopathology, etc.). Monoclonal antibody laboratory: fully equipped for MAbs production and analysis. Laboratory for in vitro culture: with annexed climatized growth-chamber and heat therapy room, equipped for micropropagation and sanitation by meristem culture. Laboratory for molecular detection: equipped with a real-time PCR apparatus, hybridization ovens, radioisotopes facility. DPPMA also owns glasshouse boxes authorized for maintenance of class 2 GMOs (plants and microorganisms).
